TRA currently has several projects underway with the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA), providing regional and agency-specific security support. DRPA recently engaged TRA to complete an update to the Regional Transit Security Strategy (RTSS), developing it in partnership with the Philadelphia Area Regional Transit Security Working Group (PARTSWG). PARTSWG is comprised of four transit systems identified by the Department of Homeland Security as a Tier 1 Systems, and includes SEPTA, DRPA/PATCO, New Jersey Transit (NJT), and the Delaware Transit Corporation (DART). These systems, located within the Philadelphia Urban Area Security Initiative, are used by commuters, residents, and tourists on a daily basis.
The Transit Security Grant Program, a grant program under the DHS, provides grant funding to owners and operators of transit systems to protect critical transportation infrastructure and the traveling public from acts of terrorism, major disasters, and other emergencies.TRA team members are working with PARTSWG member agency representatives to take a holistic view of security threats to the region’s transportation providers and their environments. This analysis will generate not only an updated regional security plan, but additional insight into how to prevent security incidents and protect people and transit assets from these threats.
In addition, TRA has teamed with renowned architecture and engineering firm AECOM to complete an assessment of DRPA’s solar canopy installation. In an effort to increase their environmental sustainability, DRPA is currently installing solar canopies at numerous PATCO stations and parking lots. TRA and AECOM are supporting the agency’s effort to determine the security impact of the positioning of the solar canopies, as well as their maintenance and upkeep.
