In December 2015, the Skytrain Automated Peoplemover at Miami International Airport overshot the end of the terminal station platform, derailing the first vehicle of the train.
TRA supported FDOT District 6 in carrying out Florida safety oversight responsibilities for monitoring the accident investigation activities being carried out by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and its contract-operators of the Skytrain system. TRA initiated a detailed information request and issued requirements for MDAD and its contractors to expand its investigation to cover additional factors beyond the technical review. TRA established verification criteria for returning to safe operational service, and TRA providing ongoing independent oversight.
